What is lead ingot? Applications of lead ingots in life

Learn about lead ingots and applications

What is lead ingot? It is a lead metal in the shape of an ingot and has a chemical composition of 99.995% Pb. Lead ingots are usually difficult to melt, the melting point is 327.3°C. When freshly mined at the factory, lead is usually bluish-white, and when exposed to air, the metal begins to tarnish and turn gray.

Lead ingots are commonly used in industrial production:

  • Used to make batteries, accumulators.
  • Used in soldering electrodes.
  • Reserve energy for wind turbines.
  • Lead is used to block X-rays.
  • Used in defense, mechatronics industries.
  • Used to create electrolytic plates.
  • Used as power cables.

The process of making lead ingots

After solving the question "What is lead ingot?", let's learn more about the process of making lead bars:

  • First, manufacturers typically extract lead from lead sulfide ores.
  • Once the lead is mined, it will go to the smelting stage with modern technological lines. At the end of the smelting process, the products created are lead lumps with mainly lead oxide content.
  • Next, the manufacturers will put the lead into the furnace to create the lead ingots up to 98% standard. If lead ingots with a purity of up to 99% are desired, the metal will continue to be treated by electrolysis.
